WINE MAKING NOTES

This wine commemorates John’s father Dr John Loughlin, an ophthalmologist, who developed and owned Waimarama Estate Winery. The wine is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38 % Cabernet Franc 20 % Merlot and 1 % Malbec from the excellent 2020 vintage, reflecting the great wines from these varieties that Dr John made at Waimarama Estate. We waited several years to get outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon fruit and in 2020 picked one low-yielding parcel at 24.9° Brix. The wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, 50 % new and the balance one year and older.

TASTING NOTES

Powerful with ripe dark plum aromatics, sweet and savory brooding notes of leather, licorice and smokey spice. Broad and silky with layers of concentrated dark berry fruit with fine mocha tannins.  Oak spice adds further complexity to the rich and seamless palate which delivers an abundance of flavour right to through to the finish.
