John is a wine lover and with wife Kathryn is the co-founder of Askerne Winery. Over the years John has worked in various industries to fund the development of the winery. John is the former Chief Executive of Richmond Ltd and is currently a professional Company Director serving on the Boards of a number of public and private companies. John’s father, the late Dr. John Loughlin, established two wineries in Hawke’s Bay which are known as Chateau Waimarama and Zepelin.
Kathryn also is a wine lover and with John is the cofounder of Askerne Winery. Kathryn is responsible for the overall management of the business. Prior to moving to Hawke’s Bay to develop the winery and vineyard, Kathryn was a Valuer and Property Manager.
Kathryn’s particular passion is with dessert wines which led to the inclusion of dessert wines in the range from 1998
Penelope first joined the Askerne team as a cellarhand in 2019. Prior to this she had gained experience working 5 vintages across New Zealand, Australia and United States post completion of her degree in Viticulture and Oenology from the University of Adelaide.
Penelope says it was inevitable to fall in love with wine having grown up in the Hawke’s Bay wine industry. Chardonnay is her real passion but is enjoying the challenge of working with 16 different varieties in a ‘small batch’ nature of winemaking.
Cellar Door / Cellar Hand
Emma joined the team at Askerne in late 2019, Emma’s interest in wine happened on arrival in New Zealand in 2019.Originally planning to study in Auckland she decided to change path and study Wine-making and Viticulture at The Eastern Institute of Technology.
Emma is an asset to the team with her can do attitude, she has worked across the Winery, Vineyard and Cellar Door. Emma has a particular interest in Cabernet Franc and Gewurztraminer
